May 9th is victory day in Russia— when the third Reich surrendered to the soviets.

It’s mind boggling how many Russians died fighting and eventually won against a militarily superior Germany. I can’t remember the name of the battle on the eastern front, but it holds the record for most casulties ever in human history, more than a million deaths.

The siege of St. Petersburg/Leningrad was especially brutal, with reports of cannibalism and depravity widespread in the years of the siege. The Russians held their ground and pushed them back, it’s pretty amazing.

In the US the eastern front is often overlooked or not even mentioned in history classes, but you have to give them credit for refusing to bend the knee. Hope you Russians enjoyed your victory day!
