    Why do we still play Ultima Online in 2019?

    We have tons of great games nowadays, with great graphics and stuff, but why we play UO?
    I was thinking about that, and i have some suggestions for the shard to keeping it growing up. I would like to elaborate better but because of my limited english, and also not to leave the text so extensive.

    Adrenaline/You can lose your items
    There is no other game that you can actually lose your stuff. Get killed, and drop everything you have to other players.
    Thats insanally good!! Thats the main reason why we still play UO, that adreanaline in our blood when you are hunting risking your stuff to get more stuff or to kill someone else and get their stuff.
    *ZuluHotel scripts increases this by far, because we DO have a LOT of stuff to risk, with magic items, armors etc.

    Housing
    There is other games with housing. But in ultima online we really NEED housing, because a house in UO represents a SAFE place where you can macro, and store your stuff.

    Macro/Skill raising
    We LOVE to macro, and we only have it in ultima online. Waking up on the morning to check how much skill you raised its absolutly a joy for everybody. Thats the second main reason why we play UO.

    Its Hard!
    We play it because its hard! But the greater the effort the greater the reward. We need months of playing, getting resources, setting up macros, overnights of macros and etc.
    And we get there! Thats the reward, when u finally maximmize your skills.
    I believe that most of people don’t realise that, BUT the harder the shard is, more the people enjoy playing. More value they give to their effort. And more likely they stay longer. Effort is proportional to happiness in ultima online. People who like to play UO, are people that like the effort that this game demands.

    I think we should encourage players to face each other, walking on the map, killing each other etc. Thats what makes the Ultima Online FUN!
    To encourage that i propose:

    1-Rethink about Occlos Safe zone.
    1.A) Remove safe city/zone from the shard
    1.B) Keep the safe zone in occlo but not allow players to MACRO there.
    1.C) Keep just the players vendors and bank NPC at the safe zone. (could be just an area in some city)
    1.D) Keep it the way it is.

    My vote is option A because:
    -Increase the need of HOUSING. (housing its a great part of the game)
    -Increase the killing on guarded cities.
    -Increase the usabillity of thiefs.
    -Keep it a little bit harder to macro. We already have macro allowed 24/7.
    -Increase what i said what this game is about. Its about adrenaline, and never be safe. Even with a guarded city, its very cool to see some PKs killing people, and shaking thinks a little bit. Where are all the PK’s of this shard?!!

    2-Rethink about Recalling
    2.A)Not allow to recall into/from house and dungeons and guarded cities.
    2.B)Not allow to recall into/from house and dungeons and make runebook not newbie.
    2.C)Not allow to recall into/from house and dungeons.
    2.D)Not allow to recall into/from house.
    2.E)Not allow to recall into/from dungeons.
    2.F)Keep it the way it is.

    My vote is option A because:
    -Encourage people to find each other on the map! Of course you could recall just 1 tile from the protection but, its alitlle more risky.
    -Good old days when we were newbie, running like hell from players to enter the city and call guards!
    -Encourage people to check before get out of the house to recall, open doors, use wis was etc.
    -Encourage people to setup some traps in front others houses! Thats so fun!
    -Recall inside dungeons its too easy.
    -Increases the adrenaline, to get in get out from houses and cities!

    3-Rethink about Runebooks
    3.A)Make it not newbie and only for Mages.
    3.B)Make it not newbie.
    3.C)Make it only for Mages keep it newbie.
    3.D)Keep it the way it is.

    My vote is option A because:
    -Making it not newbie improves the economics of the shard (see my other post about economics)
    -Making it just for Mages makes it increases the need of the Mages on the shard for support, open gates and etc.
    -Encourage people to use Moongates, and WALK on the map! WE need to FIND people, and RUN from them or try to kill them! Thats FUN and looks the shard its FULL, with a lot of people there, no just 100 people in some sanctuary city and another 80 at houses.
    -Increase the need of a house at a good position on the map, close to cities, or moongates.

    I think this 3 small adjustments can REALLY improve our gameplay and encounters on the game. And keep it more like commons shards, so it is more likely to find more people to play in here.

    *** ABOUT ZULUHOTEL’s ECONOMY ***
    In simple words: We have Items! Here we have stuff to lose. Simple.

    PVM Matters!
    Because of the need of items, we need to do Dungeons(sometimes forgotten in other shards)
    So we have both PVP and PVM here.

    Increased PVP adrenaline
    Again. Here we have stuff to lose. And get more angry when we die. (Thats increased FUN!)

    At ZuluHotel shards its very common to have item wipes with a certain frequency.
    Thats the side effect for having magic items.
    We have a little problem with the economics of that.

    We start to fill the shard with items, and stuff that were RARE its not rare anymore, and prices starts to get cheaper and cheaper so we get into a point everybody have tons of money, and tons of items.

    So, i think we need to find somehow, a good balance between itens found and money expent.
    And for me, its all about expiration and durability of the items.
    Things here dont expire, so we have some inflation. I think everything should Die/Broke/Destroy/Expire somehow.

    My suggestions for rework that and keep the shard away from items wipe are:

    1-Durability of magic weapons and armors (crafted armors too)
    1.A) Should not be able to be fixed by crafter, the durability should be decreased, and should have some random factor for instantly broke it.
    1.B) Should not be able to be fixed by crafter and the durability should be decreased.
    1.C) Keep it the way it is.

    2-Durability of Skill ITEMS, Protection ITEMS, GM Items, etc.
    * Durability like armors: Example: You have a grandmasters alchemist’s robe. When you use any skills of the class (Magery,Alchemy, etc) the robe gets damaged a little bit.
    How long the items mus be destroyed i think ADMINs have to think about it, to find the balance between time to find items like that and time to get destroyed etc.
    2.A) Should not be able to be fixed, should have durability like weaps and armors.
    2.B) Should have a expiration. Like 3 months, regardless the usage the item will be destroyed.
    2.C) Keep it the way it is.

    My vote is for option A in both suggestions because:
    – I think that way we can keep the need of PVM, and we dont inflate the shard with items. The items need to be destroyed somehow. The period of expiration can be long or short, but thats what i think admins could findout and adjust it by needed.(like when they count that shard its full of items etc)
    – I think if no one should be lvl5 or 6 forever. Once you get a full set of items to get lvl 6 crafter for example and just be in safe zone, you are forever lvl6.

    About GOLD, RESOURCES and INTERDEPENDENCY OF CLASSES:

    I think every class should be able to make GOLD in their own way, and every class should be ’responsible’ for provide RESOURCES to the shard in what he is specialized for.
    I think players should be responsible for dictate PRICES, and make the ’wheel’ of the economics, like, with you need some armors or arrows you should have to find some crafters vendores and buy it from them. If you need to buy some horses we need to buy it from rangers vendors. Reagents? from Bards. Need a gate, runebooks, Boosts etc, you need it from Mages. You get the idea.

    The ZH Scripts are the only one with this interdependency of classes, and its amazing.
    Thinking about that, and thinking about increase the dependency between classes i have some suggestions:

    Increase the need of the Crafters:
    -Decrease the amount/or remove of armor gain by magic armors. I think crafters should be the only ones responsible for providing great armors in the game. And it should brake very often, so that there is a market for this.
    -Houses not be able to buy it with gold, but with logs and iron. (saw it once in a shard) pretty cool. So you can either collect enough money to buyt logs and iron from a crafter or create a crafter. Very cool.
    -Make them responsible for create Bandages. Make warriors a little bit dependent to train. they are very strong.

    Increase the need of Bards:
    -Make reagents a little more expensive in NPCs. So bards can provide a source of reagents on from Herding.
    -Make it not possible to buy spools on NPCs. So we make the need of bards to grow cotton. So crafters would need bards to train tailor, and everybody needs crafter to produce bandage.
    -Make Mages able to only use LEATHER armors, so they can be a little more resistant from warriors, AND make ONLY Bards able to remove hides from dead corpses, increasing the need of bards at dungeons and stuff. Creating a market of leather clothes and a dependency from bard-crafter-mage.
    -Make them only ones capable of opening Maps/treasure.

    Increase the need of Thiefs:
    -Make thiefs make more gold than bards with begging.
    -Remove safe/zones so thiefs try to steal stuff.
    -Make thiefs able to snoop and steal stuff (High level needed maybe)
    -Make it possible to poison any crafted weapon, with only one charge of poison on it. Making warriors having to carry a set of weapons poisoned, like 10 poisoned swords. and make a good use of it, because of the limited amout of charges(poisoned weaps). So we have a market of poisoned weaps, made by thief, and renewable.

    Increase the need of the Rangers:
    -Dont be able to buy horses at NPCs. There are a lot of horses on the map, so we could rely on the rangers to sell it, and put their price.

    Increase the need of Mages:
    -Make runebooks expires. Like 1000 recalls, i dont know. But with that, mages could have something to make gold. They are very expensive to train.

    *Basically Mage,Rangers and War are fighting classes, so i dont think they need much more than they already have.
    This suggestions improve or encourage people to train the other classes, the IN Game Support Classes.

    Increase the RISK->REWARD factor:
    I really like that some ores like diamond,ruby,ebon are easily founded on not protected areas. And i think that should be more relevant! I think protected areas should get just iron and normal logs, or so.
    Shells only be able to get by fishing outside guarded zone.
    So with that we increase people on the MAP, killing each other, and protecting each other. etc.

    I think there is a lot of stuff to think about, there is a lot of changes that takes a lot of effort and time, and a lot of changes that can be done easily, so its easy to make some tests and see how it goes.

      im ok with the runebook idea but i couldnt add this suggestion into your runebook question so here is the idea i got out of that:

      i’m ok with runebooks having say 1000 uses per book IF when the book runs out it doesnt decay or get destroyed. but has to either be charged by a mage or left dead and intact so you can remove and replace marked runes into another book

      the ocello safe zone was just implemented to the full island and thats cool with me. but remove AFK macroing from said town wouldnt be a bad thing.

      w.r.t. safe zones, recalls, runebooks, durability of armours and items I wouldn’t vote to make any of these changes.

      I don’t really understand the comments on being able to make gold, every class has a way to farm gold and they’re all pretty equal at the moment (exception warrior).

      The best choice for armour/prot combinations are already being created by crafters so I don’t see how nerfing other armour sets would increase the need for crafters. I’d even argue that pentagram armours are not good enough, considering how long it takes to collect them. I think you should always be able to buy houses but it would be cool if crafters could make different styles not available or different coloured boats and things.

      Bard class is tough, it has very limited uses at the moment. Personally I think making the changes to resources is just going to increase the amount of people who use more than 2 clients. It’s already a big enough problem.

      Thief: people using spec thief poison on other classes would be OP, single charge or not it isn’t going to make a difference when u carry 20 weapons. Stealing from players to me is a terrible idea and I hope it never gets implemented lol. Thieves make decent gold already and can farm items not available otherwise (except hunting) so I think it’s good how it is.

      In general the ideas are decent but I’m skeptical that it would be accepted by the majority of the player base. The average players age is probably 30-35 and they don’t want to deal with quality of life issues these changes create. I also think it increases the gap between solo players/smaller groups and the bigger guilds. The larger groups already have the advantage just simply due to their ability to grind more mats and items. These changes make it more difficult for the solo/smaller groups.

      I’ve always had the most fun on shards that had 1 account, 1-2 players max per person so you had to work with others. I doubt people want to do that as they would have to rely on others lol. People can’t even agree to simple rules like ghosting, using 3+ clients, auto-looters, assistance programs and shit. Unfortunately the pvp/loot aspect of the game, which is what makes UO so great/exciting, don’t get me wrong, seems to drive people to use these things.
